A few weeks back we decided to go for another long drive down to an area near Elkton in Oregon. I was told by a coworker that the drive was scenic and worth the time.
We started out driving south of Portland for a couple of hours to a small town named Elkton. There was supposed to be a butterfly pavilion with lots of butterflies that Victoria was anxious to visit. Unfortunately, when we got there not a single butterfly was to be found. Due to the prolonged wet weather the butterflies wouldn’t be around for a few more weeks. Luckily, the grounds had some nice gardens and even a fort, Fort Umpqua. We spent a few hours walking the grounds enjoying the nice weather.
After a bit we headed west on the highway toward the coast. About 5 miles or so from the ocean we passed through an elk preserve. There were several parking areas along the highway so we picked a spot and went for a walk. We ran into several gangs of elk hanging out in the sun eating the grass. We were pretty close to most of them so we were able to get some good photos.
After looking at the map I noticed Bandon Dunes wasn’t too far away and I’d always been curious about the golf courses there so we decided to push on further south. We drove down the coast through Coos Bay and eventually got to the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. It was late in the evening, but I took a quick walk out to one of the courses. I definitely want to come back in the future to play there.
We drove back up to Coos Bay to have dinner at a Thai restaurant we passed earlier in the day. We finished eating around 8:30pm and then made the 4 hour drive back home. It was a long day, but we all enjoyed it and look forward to the next road trip.
